For technical help
The University Information Services (UIS) team provides support with IT and technical problems: Students | IT Help and Support (cam.ac.uk), and provides training courses for common software used in teaching and research (for example, Office 365, MatLab, nVivo, SPSS, etc.). Your College or Departmental IT team can also help you to navigate the computing and blended learning resources available to you.
For educational help
Generally, your Director of Studies or College Tutor is the best place to start seeking help with your studies. However, there are a range of other support services available to you, such as:
- CamGuides: the University Library has produced a set of resources for new students, at both Undergraduate and Master's level, designed to help prepare you for your studies.
- MoodleHelp: information and help pages for the University's Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle (requires Raven login)
- Lecture Capture: the University's pages on its lecture capture service, including how to use capture effectively and how to get captions
- Plagiarism and Academic Misconduct: the University's pages to support you in understanding your responsibility with regard to good academic practice
- Student Advice Service: the Student Advice Service, part of the Cambridge Student Union, is a free and confidential service to can help with a range of support needs, academic as well as personal
- Academic Subject Representatives: each subject has a student representative, elected in late November and serving for the following calendar year, who sits on Departmental and Faculty Committees and can help you to identify and resolve course-related queries. The Subject Representative elections are managed by the Cambridge Students Union: Academic Reps (cambridgesu.co.uk)
- Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre: provides assessment and support to disabled students
For pastoral help
Again, in most cases the first place to start seeking help is from your College; your Tutorial Office can help to put you in touch with the right person for your needs. There are also a range of other services that can help:
- College representatives: your College elects representatives to the JCR or MCR each year; they can help identify support areas within the College community: College Reps (cambridgesu.co.uk)
- Student Support: maintained by the University's Wellbeing team, these pages have a range of advice to help you maintain your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing
- Student Advice Service: the Student Advice Service, part of the Cambridge Student Union, is a free and confidential service to can help with a range of support needs, academic as well as personal
- University Counselling Service: provides a free and confidential service to all registered students, including individual and group counselling
